Academic Dishonesty: Plagiarism and Cheating

Plagiarism

Plagiarism is passing off someone else’s ideas or words as your own without giving credit or without giving credit properly. Plagiarism may take the form of directly copying another’s work (in whole or in part), improperly citing sources, presenting another’s view or concept without acknowledging the originator, or receiving help with an assignment beyond what one might receive from a tutor in the ECC skills centers. Academic dishonesty also refers to cheating on quizzes or exams.

Procedure

All such offenses will be reported in writing to a campus assistant academic dean.

First offenses will be handled at the department level. A professor who suspects a student of plagiarism will first meet with the student to discuss the problem. In the absence of any resolution, the student will meet with the faculty member’s department chair, and if a resolution still cannot be reached, then a meeting will be called with an assistant academic dean. Any instance of plagiarism that the professor has decided to punish with an “F” for the course will be reported along with appropriate documentation to an assistant academic dean and the dean of students

At the assistant academic dean level, the student and the faculty member involved will present all evidence relating to the alleged plagiarism, at which point the assistant academic dean will render a decision which is final. The assistant academic dean will retain a file of the proceedings, with copies submitted to the student’s advisor/department chair as well as to the dean of students.

Any appeal must be made to the vice-president of academic affairs within 30 days of the assistant academic dean’s decision.

A second offense will result in a code of conduct hearing with the possibility of dismissal from the college.

Penalties

Penalties for plagiarism and cheating may include but are not limited to the following:

  • re-writing the assignment in question

  • receiving an “F” on the assignment or test in question

  • failing the course in which the assignment was submitted

  • restricted course selection

  • academic suspension

  • expulsion from the college
